The Christian's Prespective on When and How to Fight
When God Says War Is Right
by Darrell Cole
Retail Price: $10.99 Our Price: $8.79

Across the centuries, as Christians have followed and worshiped the Prince of Peace, how have they responded to the recurring reality of war? How did they decide what was right and just, what God wanted them to do in wartime? And what guidance do their responses offer for Christians today-in the midst of global conflict?
In When God Says War Is Right, Darrell Cole offers a thorough and highly readable overview of the historic Christian doctrine of a "just war." His expert examination focuses on these topics:
1. Relating the character of God with the use of force
2. Determining when and how Christians ought to fight
3. Understanding why Christian virtues are vital when using force
4. Learning lessons from World War II, Vietnam, and the 1991 Gulf War
5. Responding to today's war against terrorism
In today's war-stricken world, this is valuable, timely, and trustworthy guidance for Christians.

MODERN ISLAM AND WAR
While it would be false to say that Islam is a religion of war, it would be true to say that the Islamic tradition has typically been more comfortable with war than has Christianity. Part of the reason is how each tradition views the origin of war and what it means to be human.
In a speech, Ayatollah Taleqani claimed that the role of anger in jihad is quite different from any Christian conception. Ac-cord-ing to Taleqani, God created human beings with the power of anger in order to safeguard the right to live. Anger is a defensive power; it is that which moves you to act in defense of yourself and others. Reason must guide the other faculties, so reason guides anger as a tool to defend rights, territory, dignity, nationality, and so forth. When anger is not utilized in its God-given way, it will become deviant and will result in wars of conquest for material gain and the wanton destruction of other human beings...

What Others Are Saying
|
"For many years I have read about, thought about, written about, and spoken about just war. Nothing I've studied, however, has taught me as much as Darrell Cole's book. Cole's in-depth research and clear writing style yield what I believe will become a new classic work in the field. The fact that our nation is attempting to prosecute a just war on terrorism makes Cole's book both timely and an indispensable resource for policymakers and the citizens who hold them accountable."
